SUMMARY:Big Nature Day 2012
LOCATION:The Natural History Museum, London, UK.
DESCRIPTION: Big Nature Day will be a celebration of natural history in its broadest sense, bringing a large number of external groups to the Natural History Museum to mark the International Day of Biological Diversity and the contribution of the OPAL (Open Air Laboratories) project to the study of nature in the UK. The Natural History Museum will be hosting a nature fair, putting thousands of members of the public in touch with amateur naturalists, societies and recording schemes from across the country. Regardless of whether our visitors are interested in ferns, frogs, spiders or stinkhorns there will be a society or recording scheme to match! Alongside the nature fair, OPAL staff will be showcasing their national surveys and regional outreach programmes, to demonstrate the impact and legacy of the five year project. Big Nature Day will also see the launch of a new cub scouts Naturalist Badge, developed by the Natural History Museum, Wildlife Trusts and National Trust, helping to inspire and train a new generation of naturalists like ourselves. SUMMARY:Bug Club residential weekend 2012
LOCATION:Hill End Centre, Eynsham Road, Farmoor, Oxford, OX2 9NJ.
DESCRIPTION: Hill End Centre is on the edge of Wytham Woods Nature Reserve and is an ideal location for a 4-day weekend, learning about entomology from the experts! The weekend will be led by Darren Mann, from the Oxford University Museum of Natural History, and Maxwell Barclay, Head Curator of Beetles at London's Natural History Museum. All aspects of field entomology will be covered (or as Darren says, there will be more entomology than you could ever imagine!). Dormitory accommodation will be available for up to 20 people, and tents can be pitched. The entomological training is free but Hill End Centre charges for accommodation and for day visitors. However, the charges are low (under GBP 50 per person for the whole weekend) and the AES hopes to be able to subsidise the event. If you are interested please book as soon as you can to be sure of a place (email the Bug Club or write in) as there have already been expressions of interest in this event, which it timed to take place after the London Olympics and before the Paralympics. Please note: This event is open to current Bug Club members only. Contact: Dafydd Lewis bugclub@amentsoc.org Full event listing: http://www.amentsoc.org/events/listings/0587/
