SUMMARY:The Floral Fringe Fair 2012
LOCATION:Bignor Park, West Sussex RH20 1HG, UK.
DESCRIPTION: A new fair with a wildlife theme held on an estate that has won an award for creating a habitat for the rare field cricket. The organiser's passion is for attracting wildlife to the garden, particularly for making people understand that insects in the garden are vital if many birds are to be attracted, so the fair will be attended by stands from the RSPB, The Sussex Wildlife Trust, The Woodland Trust and Butterfly and Bat conservation. There will also be contemporary crafts and local food producers. Contact: Jean Jackman jeanjackman@hotmail.com +44(0)7939272443 Full event listing: http://www.amentsoc.org/events/listings/0536/

SUMMARY:Big Nature Day 2012
LOCATION:The Natural History Museum, London, UK.
DESCRIPTION: Big Nature Day will be a celebration of natural history in its broadest sense, bringing a large number of external groups to the Natural History Museum to mark the International Day of Biological Diversity and the contribution of the OPAL (Open Air Laboratories) project to the study of nature in the UK. The Natural History Museum will be hosting a nature fair, putting thousands of members of the public in touch with amateur naturalists, societies and recording schemes from across the country. Regardless of whether our visitors are interested in ferns, frogs, spiders or stinkhorns there will be a society or recording scheme to match! Alongside the nature fair, OPAL staff will be showcasing their national surveys and regional outreach programmes, to demonstrate the impact and legacy of the five year project. Big Nature Day will also see the launch of a new cub scouts Naturalist Badge, developed by the Natural History Museum, Wildlife Trusts and National Trust, helping to inspire and train a new generation of naturalists like ourselves. SUMMARY:Wildlife Gardening Forum Conference - Lawns, Biodiversity and People
LOCATION:Flett Events Theatre, Natural History Museum, South Kensington, London, SW7 5BD, UK.
DESCRIPTION: You may wonder why lawns have been singled out for a special themed conference meeting, and possibly feel that the subject is not of great general interest. But lawn management could be one of the Forum's greatest challenges, and one of our biggest opportunities, not just within private gardens, but over the whole fabric of urban green infrastructure. Lawns are the biggest single habitat component in most gardens, usually covering more than half their area. For most people they are an essential multi-function resource, used for children's play, sitting about in the sun, hanging out the washing and a place to chuck crusts to feed the birds. We may moan about mowing grass, but it is actually quite a quick and easy form of management, frequently popular with techno-centric middle aged men. Whatever we recommend for wildlife, it has got to fit in with what gardeners want. On the other hand, conventional lawns are not very sustainable. To avoid browning in dry periods, people use prodigious amounts of tap water, even though lawns always bounce back when it finally rains. Some gardeners use large quantities of expensive fertiliser and selective herbicides to keep them green and weed-free. These chemicals have a high carbon footprint, and cause releases of nitrite much in excess of agricultural grassland. Cutting with a petrol lawnmower release much more Carbon Dioxide than the grass lays down as biomass. These problems will get worse with climate change, to the extent that the lush green English lawn may have to become a thing of the past. Advance booking is required. The cost per delegate is only GBP 25, which includes a vegetarian friendly lunch and refreshments through the day. Any surplus will go to build the Forum's (small) reserves. SUMMARY:Introduction to Forensic Entomology 2012
LOCATION:Bournemouth University (Talbot Campus), Bournemouth, Dorset, UK.
DESCRIPTION: The Scenario... At a country estate, a gamekeeper stumbles upon decomposing remains he believes to be human. The police cordon off the area and after initial assessment by the CSI team a specialist entomological team is called in to assist the pathologist in ascertaining the time of death: Are the remains human? Can evidence be collected to provide a PMI? You will participate in a series of lectures and practical sessions giving an overview of entomology and its application within forensic science. The course will provide basic laboratory invertebrate identification using entomological keys. You will experience collection and analysis of entomological evidence from a crime scene following current ACPO procedures. SUMMARY:Bug Club residential weekend 2012
LOCATION:Hill End Centre, Eynsham Road, Farmoor, Oxford, OX2 9NJ.
DESCRIPTION: Hill End Centre is on the edge of Wytham Woods Nature Reserve and is an ideal location for a 4-day weekend, learning about entomology from the experts! The weekend will be led by Darren Mann, from the Oxford University Museum of Natural History, and Maxwell Barclay, Head Curator of Beetles at London's Natural History Museum. All aspects of field entomology will be covered (or as Darren says, there will be more entomology than you could ever imagine!). Dormitory accommodation will be available for up to 20 people, and tents can be pitched. The entomological training is free but Hill End Centre charges for accommodation and for day visitors. However, the charges are low (under GBP 50 per person for the whole weekend) and the AES hopes to be able to subsidise the event. If you are interested please book as soon as you can to be sure of a place (email the Bug Club or write in) as there have already been expressions of interest in this event, which it timed to take place after the London Olympics and before the Paralympics. Please note: This event is open to current Bug Club members only. Contact: Dafydd Lewis bugclub@amentsoc.org Full event listing: http://www.amentsoc.org/events/listings/0587/
