SUMMARY:Quekett Microscopical Club excursion to Wimbledon Common
LOCATION:Wimbledon Common, Wimbledon, London, UK.
DESCRIPTION: It is planned that the main theme for this year's visit by the will return to pond dipping. However we will sample at the Ravine pond, which was only created in 1998. This is only a little further away than the Queensmere where we have sampled previously, and is a short but pleasant walk from our base. In fact the overflow from its dam joins the brook that bubbles on down the ravine to enter the Queensmere. Members will be free to indulge in almost every other type of natural history interest if this does not appeal to them. The area is some 1140 acres, a large part of which is designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest. It has a very varied range of habitats from mature woodland, prime heath land, grasslands with a mix of long and short sward, scrub, ponds, streams, bogs, and one river, the Beverley Brook. There are nine ponds and meres on the common. Maps and advice will be available to those who wish to "do their own thing". The Conservators of the Common have again generously given us access to their very comfortable Information Centre, which we will use as our headquarters for the day, and also to set up our microscopes for examining the finds. This will be available to members from 9.30am to 4.30pm. It is very conveniently located adjacent to the main (free) car park, and the excellent Windmill Tea Rooms, who serve hot and cold refreshments all day. Microscopes, slides, petri dishes, pond nets, sorting trays, identification literature etc will be provided. Members may obviously bring their own equipment including microscopes if they wish, but room for microscopes in the Information Centre will be limited.
