DESCRIPTION: A series of talks on the entomological activities of museums, with behind the scenes tours. The aim of the day is to give amateur entomologists an opportunity to see what goes on inside museums, to see the facilities available and air their views on museum and their collections. 11.00am History of the Hope Dr George McGavin, Assistant Curator, Hope Entomological Collections, O.U.M.N.H. A talk on the 148 year history and the future of the Hope Entomological Collections, the second largest insect collection in Britain. 11.30am: Beetles at the Natural History Museum Max Barclay, Curator Coleoptera, Department of Entomology, The Natural History Museum, London An introduction to the collections of the Natural History Museum, London one of the largest collections of beetles in the World. 12.00pm: From collection to the web Mike Wilson, National Museum of Wales Digital imaging is transforming the use of museum collections. An example from a project to image the world "sharpshooter" leafhoppers will be discussed. LUNCH (not provided) 1.30pm: World Museum Liverpool Guy Knight, Zoology Curator, World Museum Liverpool The entomology department was recently refurbished with access by the general public and amateur entomologists to collections in mind. 2.00pm: View from the Outside Mark Telfer The amateurs view on Museum collections, access and usage. 2.30pm: Museum standard specimen preservation Darren J. Mann , Collections Manager, Hope Entomological Collections, O.U.M.N.H. The reputed oldest pinned insect in the World is 304 years old. Museum standard practices for specimen preparation and preservation; such as type of pin, labelling card and mounting agents are critical for the longevity of insect specimens. 3.00pm: Discussion. Accessibility to collections, how can museums be more user friendly? Improving links between the Amateur and the Museum 3.30pm Collections Tour A behind the scenes look at the Hope Entomological Collections, including Dr Livingstone's Tsetse fly, the 304 year old Bath White butterfly and the Verrall-Collin fly collection.
