DESCRIPTION: Ecology in schools is struggling; while many young people are concerned about the environment, they do not see the relevance of school learned ecology to society or ecological issues in society, possible future study and career opportunities. Increasingly ecology is delivered a series of abstract concepts which are rarely linked together. The British Ecological Society (BES) has an important role in bridging the gap between ecologists and those responsible for determining and delivering the ecological content of science curricula. The Education, Training and Careers Committee (ETCC) is keen to initiate an on-going fundamental review of ecology in the curriculum. The BES will be hosting a workshop, the aim of which is to bring together ecologists and educators to carry out a review of ecology within UK science curricula and consider the questions: * What is ecological thinking? * What ecology should young people know? * Why should they know it? * When do they need to know it? Please note that places are limited and you will need to confirm your intention to attend with the BES.
