DESCRIPTION: 'Social learning: from miniature brains to consensus building' Professor Lars Chittka (Inaugural Lecture) Many insect species live in tightly knit societies containing thousands of individuals, working together as a superorganism. Communication is art of the success in making colonies run like smoothly oiled machines, and so, it turns out, is learning from each other. I will discuss a spectrum of social information use, from teaching, consensus building, tradition, to imitation of illicit flower robbing habits in the pollinating insects. Lars Chittka studied Biology at the Universities of Goettingen and Berlin. He obtained his PhD at the Free University of Berlin in 1993, producing seminal work on the evolution of colour vision. After a postdoctoral fellowship in the US (Stony Brook) he came to Germany as a lecturer in 1997, and has been a faculty member at QM since 2002, working on insect sensory systems and cognition.
