SUMMARY:IOBC/WPRS Pheromones and other semiochemicals conference
LOCATION:Bursa, Turkey.
DESCRIPTION: Insects deliver their behavioural messages by a wide array of chemical compounds known as semio-chemicals. Semio-chemicals facilitate communication either between members of a single species (i.e. intra-specific pheromones) or between members of different species (i.e. inter-specific allelochemicals). Pheromones are commonly used in "Integrated Pest Management (IPM)" programmes for detection and monitoring, mass trapping, mating disruption and attract-and-kill of insect pests. In addition to pheromones, allelochemicals such as kairomones have received considerable attention in recent years. The conference will take place for the first time in Turkey, one of the leading countries in the world agricultural production. Hence, it is of great importance for researchers and companies to introduce novel semio-chemical technologies and products in order to support their use in pest control, particularly in countries with a growing demand of green management methods. There are still many worldwide challenges to be tackled by the reseachers in chemical ecology, including the limited application of semiochemicals for non-lepidopteran insects such as beetles, sawflies and aphids, the inadequate understanding of the mechanisms of mating disruption, the difficulty of evaluating the effectiveness of pheromone in the field, the lengthy registration process for semio-chemical based products, and the need to understand the population biology of the invasive pest species. Nowadays the major question is how to move semio-chemical research and applications forward.
