SUMMARY:Bumblebees Workshop 2014
LOCATION:Chilcomb House, Winchester, Hampshire, SO23 8RD, UK.
DESCRIPTION: Bumblebees are one of the few types of adult insect which can be seen flying in every month of the year but how many of us know how many species there are in Britain or can tell the species apart. What distinguishes a Cuckoo Bumblebee from a True Bumblebee, or a male from a worker or queen? Find out during this one-day workshop which provides an introduction to the Bumblebees of the British Isles and their identification The day is suitable for anyone aged 18 and over and will include various talks and demonstrations by the leader using an illustrated talk, microscopes and museum specimens. However, the emphasis for the day is very much on participants having a go themselves at identifying actual specimens using the microscopes and identification keys provided. During the afternoon session (weather permitting), we will search the grounds of Chilcomb House to demonstrate the fieldwork techniques used to find and record species in their natural habitat. Copies of A Pocket Guide to the Bumblebees of Britain and Ireland by Bryan will be available to purchase on the day. Cost: £15.00 (to include tea/coffee; participants to provide their own packed lunch). Prior booking essential (numbers limited to 20).
