DESCRIPTION: The University Museum of Zoology contains collections of international importance, including many type specimens and other specimens collected by people such as Charles Darwin and Alfred Russell Wallace. The mollusc collection is extensive, one of the largest to be found in any provincial museum. The nucleus of the collection was made by Robert MacAndrew (died 1873), who ran a shipping business in the mid nineteenth century. It includes material collected from various localities around the British Isles, as well as from Norway, Madeira and the Gulf of Suez. Subsumed within the MacAndrew collection are other important collections, such as the William Benson collection of land snails from the Indian Subcontinent. This contains many potential type specimens (>500). The mollusc collection includes about 250 recognized types, including several figured in Reeve's Conchologia Iconica. This meeting provides an opportunity to view this collection and to see 'behind the scenes at the museum. This event is organised by the Conchological Society of Great Britain and Ireland. Amateur Entomologists' Society members are also eligible to attend. Please inform the leader if you plan to attend.
