SUMMARY:Biodiversity and Endangered Species - Rethinking the Balance of Nature
LOCATION:Fitzwilliam College Auditorium, University of Cambridge, Storey's Way, Cambridge, CB3 0DG, UK.
DESCRIPTION: Biodiversity is an all-encompassing term to describe the variety of life and all levels of biological organization on Earth. Biodiversity as we know it is the result of billions of years of evolution, shaped by natural processes and, increasingly, by humans. There is good reason to believe that human mismanagement and pollution of the world's natural resources has placed our planet on the brink of disaster. One of the most striking symptoms of this precarious state of affairs is the number of species around the world on the verge of extinction. It is speculated that we are in the process of bringing about the greatest extinction of species since the disappearance of the dinosaurs 65 million years ago. The fifth annual EMBL-EBI Science and Society symposium 'Biodiversity and Endangered Species - Rethinking the Balance of Nature' presents four diverse viewpoints on biodiversity conservation and the contribution of biological research. No registration is necessary. The symposium is free and open to all.
