DESCRIPTION: This introduction to British bats will be aimed at people with a general interest in bat ecology as well as environmental or land management professionals who seek a more thorough understanding of survey techniques and management practices to benefit bats. The course will start with an overview of the ecology and diversity of British bats and detail key identification features in the hand as well as identification by droppings and echolocation calls. The course will involve discussion of bat conservation and threats including the protection of bat species under UK and international law. The course will provide an overview of bat survey techniques including bat box checks, tree surveys, building inspections, emergence/re-entry and activity surveys and netting/trapping. This will mostly be classroom-based discussing best practice approaches, supplemented with bat box checks and ground level tree assessments on the Feed Bristol site.
