Ecology
Ecology is the scientific study of all aspects of ecosystems. Since there are many different components of ecosystems, from mammals to soil, ecology is an interdisciplinary subject.
People who study ecology are called ecologists. Ecologists may focus on any sort of ecosystem from tropical rainforests to dead wood.

Whole ecosystems exist around dead wood.
