National Insect Week 2014
Published: 23 June 2014
It's National Insect Week this week and it looks like the weather will be perfect for getting outside and hunting for bugs.
It's also the perfect time to think about how important insects are, here are just a few examples:
- 1 in 3 mouthfuls of food we eat comes from insect pollinated crops
- without insects there would be no chocolate
- insects are an important food source for many other animals
- without dung beetles and other dung feeding insects we'd live in a very unpleasant world
As a National Insect Week partner the AES is proud to be involved in two different events this week. One is a bioblitz at Perivale Wood Private Nature Reserve in west London, in association with the Selborne Society, on Saturday.
On Sunday we have an event at the British Entomological Society's HQ at Dinton Pastures Country Park, near Reading.
There are also other regional events run by AES members.
We hope to see you at one of our events or one of the many other National Insect Week events.
